Winning Craps Strategy, Craps Systems, and Craps Methods

The Don't Come bet is the exact opposite of the Come Line bet and is also called "betting against the dice". The details of the 'don't come' bet are as follows: The "Don't Come" bet must be made when a pass line point is already established. You lose when a 7 or 11 is rolled and win on a 2 or 3 (12 is a "stand-off"). You are winning at craps if a 7 is rolled before your "come-point" is repeated, and lose if the "come-point" is made before a 7 is rolled. You make this bet in the "Don't Come" line that is circled in the below graphic.

Again, the odds are in your favor of winning at craps that a 7 would come out before a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 so that's why the odds bet pays the exact opposite odds of the pass line. Here are the payouts:

  • If point is 6 or 8 and a 7 is thrown - 5 to 6 odds
  • If point is 5 or 9 and a 7 is thrown - 2 to 3 odds
  • If point is 4 or 10 and a 7 is thrown - 1 to 2 odds

What does this mean for you as the player when winning at craps? Well, if you put odds money on your don't come bet be prepared to put a little extra on there to make it worth your while. For example, an initial don't come bet of $5 on a point of 6 would need to be supplemented by an odds bet of $6 to only get $5 back of the odds money if a 7 is thrown before a 6. In English you say? Basically, you've wagered $11 to get $10 and that's considered winning at craps!?Why? Because, the odds of a 7 coming out before a 6 are slightly greater so the house hedges its bet. This is only an example on a 6 too. If it was a 4 or a 10 then you only have to put even more extra money on the odds because a 4 or 10 are even harder to roll before a 7.

Don't Come Bet Example

Again, in order to show how this is winning at craps nothing is more clear than an example so our friend Jake has decided to play the don't come line on a roll where the shooter has already established a point of 9. He places a $5 chip on the 'don't come' line and the shooter throws a 4. Jake's come point is now a 4 and Jake takes odds on his don't come bet. Jake knows that the 4 pays 1 to 2 odds so for every 2 dollars he gets 1 back. Jake decides to put $10 in odds on his original $5 bet. Note that if Jake is to say that he's winning at craps with this bet he will receive $5 for his original don't come bet plus only $5 for his odds. Yes, it doesn't seem fair but the chances of a 7 coming out before a 4 are very probable.

The shooter throws an 11 as the next throw which doesn't affect Jake's don't come bet. He still has a chance of winning at craps. Next throw... Shooter throws a 4. Shucks, Jake loses his don't come bet and his odds because the 4 came out before the 7. Such is the luck of the table and Jake is now determined to that next time he'll be winning at craps. Jake throws down another $5 on the 'don't come' line because the original pass line point of 9 has not been made yet and we are not on the "come-out" roll. This time the shooter throws an 8 and Jake's come point is an 8. Jake puts $6 of odds on his 8, which will return him $5 if he wins. Shooter throws... What do you know, a 7 pops up. Jake is winning at craps and he gets $5 for his original don't come and $5 for the odds.

As I said with the don't pass line, I don't recommend that beginners make don't come bets until they feel very comfortable with how the odds work and how to reverse the odds in their head in order to start winning at craps with this bet. Once a beginner can feel comfortable with the bet then, by all means, make this bet when you feel that a 7 is coming and good luck to you!

Don't Come Bet Percentages

As you can see with the odds published here, it pays off to take advantage of the odds bet when the house allows higher odds. Obviously, the house advantage lessens at each increment of the odds and you should note that whenever you are playing a 'don't come' bet.
