Playing craps, guide to playing craps!

The Place Bet is just another variation of betting "with" a number on the table. You can make a place bet at anytime when playing craps and you simply hand the dealer your bet and tell them you want to place the "x". (With "x" being the number you want to place.) The details of the place bet are as follows: You may make a place bet any time when playing craps, on any or all of the following numbers: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. If the number you have "placed" rolls before a 7 you win and you are paid as follows:

  • If the point placed is 4 or 10 - 9:5 odds
  • If the point placed is 5 or 9 - 7:5 odds
  • If the point placed is 6 or 8 - 7:6 odds

Notice these odds given and you'll notice something different then the pass line odds because the pass line has better odds and is less to the casino advantage when playing craps!?That being said you are better off playing the pass line or come line over the place bets in the long run. Remember though, craps is supposed to be fun, so if you like to play place bets than more power to you! Reference the percentages table below for the odds and casino advantages on the place bet when playing craps.

One thing you should always remember when making a place bet is that you should make your place bet in multiples of $6 for the 6 or 8 as it makes the dealer's job much easier and you get a better payout by putting that extra $1 into each $5 bet. Also note that the place bet is kind of "useless" on a come-out roll and should typically be made after a point has been established when playing craps. Why is it useless on the come-out roll? Because the place bet is only valid after a point is established so it's more acceptable to place it after a point is established.

Place Bet Example

Our friend Jake, who is still playing craps, has come upon a craps table that already has a point established of 10. Jake likes the vibe on this table and decides to make some place bets. He tells the dealer to put $27 "across the board" which means he wants a place bet on all the numbers except the point number. The dealer place $5 on the 4, $5 on the 5, $6 on the 6, $6 on the 8, and $5 on the 9. Jake now has the board mostly covered with place bets and the rolling begins. Shooter throws an 8. Jake is a winner on his placed 8 bet and he wins $7. Shooter then throws a 4. Great! Jake has won another place bet and gets $9 for his placed 4 bet.

The shooter then throws a 10. The point is made and Jake is still in business because that doesn't affect his place bets at all. It's now a new come-out roll and the shooter throws a "front-line winner 7". Does Jake lose his place bets? No!?Remember that the place bets are not in play on come-out rolls so Jake is safe while playing craps this time.

The shooter then establishes the point at a 4 and Jake moves his previous place bet on the 4 to the 10 since 10 is no longer the point. The dice stay very hot and Jake rakes it in on this roll by winning 8 place bets in all until the shooter 7's out.

Place Bet Percentages

The place bet does not offer as good of odds as the pass line but you might notice that the 6 and 8 offer fairly good odds as compared to most other bets on the table. My recommendation, when playing craps, if you're going to make a place bet, is to make it a 6 or 8.
