Come Bet Example |
 |
 |
 |
It's always easier to learn with an example, whether you're playing online craps or not, so back to our friend Jake... He has just walked to a new craps table and the point was already established and the point is a 6. Jake is feeling lucky and he wants some action on this table. This is a perfect time to make a come bet. Jake slaps a $5 chip down on the come bet area (or, if he's playing online craps, he clicks the mouse to indicate that he's placing a come bet). Remember the point is a 6 and Jake is not participating in that part of the game as his only bet is the come bet for right now. The shooter throws an 8 so Jake's come bet moves to the 8 and now the logic is simple, if the shooter throws another 8 before a 7 then Jake wins. If a 7 is thrown then Jake loses.
Jake knows that he can place odds on his 8 and he also knows that the odds bets are very smart bets because they lessen the house's advantage over the player so he puts an extra $10 as an odds bet to his $5. This casino allows 2x odds so that is why he can put double his original bet as odds. After a few more throws of the dice, the shooter finally throws an 8. Jake is a winner and he wins his original bet of $5 plus his odds bet of $10 plus an extra $2 for odds. (6-5 odds for the #'s 6 and 8).
OK, there might be some questions you have for different outcomes of this example so I'll go over some different permutations of some other things that could have happened in this example. Let's pretend that 8 was never thrown.
- If a 7 or 11 was thrown, he would have won his $5 immediately.
- If a 2, 3, or 12 was thrown, he would have lost his $5 immediately.
- Any point number of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 would simply make a come-point for Jake. Note that if a 6 was thrown which was the point for this roll, Jake's come bet still goes on the 6 for the next roll and all the same rules apply.
Come bets are another way to put some money rolling with the dice. When I play online craps, I often play my pass line bet first and then play 1 or 2 come bets to cover a few different numbers on the table. It's sometimes nice because it hedges your original pass line bet too. Imagine you made your pass line bet which totaled $15 and then put $5 on the come bet for the next roll. Shooter throws a 7, you lost the $15 but at least you won the $5 on the come bet. It's more psychological than anything but on a night when the dice are cold you can make your money last longer that way.
