I like to play craps in land casinos, and I also enjoy playing internet craps. But of all the bets on the craps table, I don't think I've ever made a lay bet in my life. Why? It's just one of those weird bets that very, very few people play in the game of craps. I've never seen anyone place that bet in internet craps, and only a few times in land casinos. It's very similar to the don't pass/don't come bets in that you are betting "against the dice" but it just seems like people don't lay their bets and stick to the don't pass or don't come when they are betting against the dice. Again, this is just my experience and the lay bet is a valid bet that can be made at anytime.
Here are the details of the lay bet (the rules are the same for regular casino craps and internet craps): The lay bet is the opposite of the buy bet and the same as the don't come bet but with different paybacks. The lay bets may be placed on the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. The bet itself is that a 7 will be rolled before the number you choose. Obviously the 7 is more likely to be rolled so you have to wager more than you can win. The player must pay a 5% commission on the bet made and the following odds are paid:
- If the point laid is 4 or 10 - 1:2 odds
- If the point laid is 5 or 9 - 2:3 odds
- If the point laid is 6 or 8 - 5:6 odds
Lay bets are not recommended for beginners in craps, unless they're playing for fun money at an internet craps game, and should be understood thoroughly before making lay bets. Refer to the example below to get a better understanding of how lay bets work.
